Every NHL team plays 84 games in the 2026-27 regular season, up from 82 the year before. That is 1,344 games across the league, starting Tuesday, September 29, 2026 and finishing Saturday, April 10, 2027.
The season is two days longer than last season but spread over 18 more dates, so it is a wider calendar as well as a longer one.
Where the two extra games went
This is the part most coverage skips, and it is countable straight off the schedule. Every team faces seven divisional opponents, eight more inside its conference, and all 16 teams in the other conference. What changed is only the first of those three.
Last season the divisional schedule was lopsided: each team played five of its seven divisional rivals four times and the other two only three. In 2026-27 that irregularity is gone — every team plays every divisional rival exactly four times, and every one of those series splits two home and two away. The conference and interconference slates are untouched at three games and two games per opponent.
So the two extra games are not sprinkled across the league. Both of them are divisional, and they exist to make the division schedule symmetrical.
Key dates and breaks
Opening night is September 29, 2026. The regular season ends April 10, 2027, with the schedule running 194 days end to end and hockey on 185 of them.
What 84 games changes for fantasy
Mostly arithmetic, but the arithmetic is everywhere. Any per-game rate now multiplies by 84 rather than 82, so a point-per-game player projects for 84 points instead of 82 — every full-season total on the fantasy projections is built that way. A half-a-goal-per-game shooter gains a goal over the season. Career and single-season records set over 82 games are no longer like-for-like comparisons.
The less obvious effect is on your weekly lineup. More games over more dates does not mean fuller fantasy weeks — the extra dates absorb most of the extra games, and the shape of a typical week barely changes. We counted that out in detail in the 84-game season: games per week, off-nights and back-to-backs, which has games per team per week, which nights are light, and where the back-to-backs fall.
If you are drafting, the 2026-27 fantasy draft kit collects the forward, defense, goalie and category boards, all of them on 84-game totals.
Where these numbers come from
Every figure above is counted from the league's published 2026-27 schedule as it stands today, not quoted from an announcement. The scores page has the full schedule by date and each team page carries its own. If games are postponed and made up during the season, the totals here are the ones the schedule was released with.
