The whole 2026-27 schedule is in the database, so the games-per-week question can be counted instead of guessed at. 1,344 regular-season games, 84 for each of the 32 teams, September 29 through April 10, played across 185 dates. Every number below comes off those games and last season's, which are in the same database.
Two definitions decide everything that follows. A fantasy week is Monday through Sunday, which is what the major platforms use. A light night is a date carrying 8 or fewer games — half the league or less on the ice, so a lineup slot is easy to fill.
The two extra games did not make the weeks fuller
The season moved earlier at both ends: 8 days earlier at the start, 6 at the finish. It covers the same 28 Monday-to-Sunday windows last season covered, with 32 more games in them and 18 more dates to put them on.
So there is more room, and the league used it to flatten the season rather than fill it.
The three-game week went from 46% of all team-weeks to 56%, and it took from both ends. Four-game weeks are down, 278 to 223; no team plays five times in a week, where four did last season; and the empty weeks nearly vanished, 64 to 14. Weeks of two games or fewer fell too, 204 to 172. The schedule edge you could get from streaming a fourth game is simply smaller this season than last, in both directions.
Two things drive that, and only one is the extra games. Take out the two weeks around the All-Star break and the average team-week is 3.12 games — 3.15 last season, once its own break weeks come out. The 84-game season is not a busier week; it is the same week with a much shorter February stop.
Back-to-backs are the clearest gain: 377 sets this season against 430 last season, 53 fewer across 32 more games. A back-to-back is what forces a coach to his second goalie, so fewer of them is a season where the starters start more.
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and then everything else
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday carry 63% of the season between them, and the other four nights all average under six. That is the streaming calendar: 113 of the 185 dates are light nights, and on the other 72 you are choosing between players rather than looking for one. No Saturday all season is a light night.
Whose weeks come in lumps
Every team plays 84 games, so a four-game week is always paid for somewhere else. The question is how evenly a team's 84 are spread. These are the four lumpiest schedules and the three flattest.
The Kraken have 11 four-game weeks, the most in the league — and 8 weeks of two games or fewer, also the most. The Maple Leafs are the opposite end of the same trade: 4 four-game weeks, but only 2 weeks where they play twice or less, the fewest of any team. In a weekly-lineup league that is a real difference in shape, and it is not visible anywhere on a projection board.
The light-night column is the other half. The Capitals play 40 of their 84 games on nights with 8 or fewer games, 48% of the season; the Predators play 22, 26%. In a daily league that decides how often a player is startable at all, and the two ends of it are 18 games apart.
Where the season stops
There are two scheduled shutdowns: December 23 to December 25 for the holidays, and February 4 to February 7 for All-Star weekend. The holiday one sits inside week 13, which is why that week holds 34 games.
February is the one to plan around. Week 19 (February 1 – February 7) has 14 games in the whole league and 14 teams that do not play at all, and week 20 only gets to 34. A head-to-head matchup in there is settled by which roster happens to have bodies on the ice. Then week 21 (February 15 – February 21) is the fullest week of the season, 57 games with 20 teams playing four times. Last season the same stretch of calendar was a 19-day shutdown beginning February 6; this season it is four days and a very lopsided fortnight either side.
Opening week is the other odd one. It runs September 28 to October 4, but the first game is on the Tuesday, so it holds 39 games — the 4th thinnest week of the year. The Rangers and Canucks play four; the Senators play one.
What this does not know
Postponements, and who is on the ice. The counts hold as long as the schedule does, but the projected skaters in the table above come from the 2026-09-21 run and will move when camp lines are synced. Strength of opponent is not in any of this either: a four-game week is four games, not four good matchups.
The scores page has the schedule by date and each team page carries its own. Week-by-week counts for the week ahead start once the season does.
